Susan Herman Obituary, Warren Ohio Has Died – Death Cause

Susan Herman Obituary, Death – Susan Ann Herman, age 82, of Warren, Ohio, previously of Girard and Howland, passed away at Community Skilled Health Care Centre on Sunday, May 14, 2023. She was born in Cincinnati on June 26, 1940, and she grew up in Indian Hill. She was the daughter of William H. Sontag, who passed away, and Betty Jane Weber Sontag, who also passed away.

Sue earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Cincinnati after attending Summit Country Day School and graduating from both institutions. She was a member of the Theta Phi Alpha sorority and was recognized by Glamour magazine in 1959 as one of the Top 10 Best Dressed College Girls in the United States. Sue served as a tutor for numerous players of the University of California’s men’s basketball team that competed in the NCAA Championship. One of those students was Oscar Robinson, a great basketball player known as “The Big O,” who fondly referred to 6-foot-tall Sue as “The Big S.”

She tied the knot with the man she would spend the rest of her life with, Jim Herman (UC ’60), and together they had the most fulfilling existence in the Warren region. Sue was a leader for both the Brownies and the Girl Scouts. She also sponsored low-income families during the holiday season, and she offered her time to teach arts and crafts at the Trumbull Art Guild as well as at the TAMPEEL Recycling Center. She was an avid supporter of her community and served on the boards and committees of a wide variety of organizations, including Junior Crafts, Trumbull Town Hall, TMH Women’s Auxiliary (where she was involved in the annual Charity Ball), YWCA (where she produced the Festival of Trees), and the Harriet Taylor Upton Association. She was instrumental in the creation of the Women’s Park in Warren and served as its designer.
