John Whalen Obituary, Death – John Whalen has died. Complications with Type I diabetes, which John Whalen managed with amazing discipline and grace for more than 60 years, ultimately led to his death on May 19, 2023 at the Fairfield County Hospice. His funeral was held at the Fairfield County Cemetery. John Whalen was a man who possessed tremendous empathy, a high level of intelligence, and a fierce will.
The Fairfield County Hospice was the location of his funeral services. He helped countless students navigate the challenges they encountered during their adolescent years and gave a voice to those who felt as though they were invisible. He was a mentor to a generation of young people. He made sure that each and every student was treated with respect, and he made sure that those students who didn’t feel like they were seen received support and encouragement from him. Cantor House, the sixth residential hall at Greenwich High School, was named after him.
Additionally, with his aid, the Greenwich High School Senior Internship Program was able to get off the ground, which went on to serve as a model for similar programs in other school systems. His birthday is August 23, 1942, and he spent his childhood in the Philipse Manor neighborhood of North Tarrytown, New York. He came from a long line of Irish immigrants who settled in New York, and his mother was from Ireland. He attended Archbishop Stepinac High School, Saint Anselm College, and the University of New Hampshire, each of which awarded him with a diploma in its respective field. His high school sweetheart, Susan Whalen (Weeks), eventually became his wife, and the two of them have been devoted to one another for more than 61 years.
