Joel Mercado Obituary, Death – Thursday evening marked the beginning of the investigation into a deadly accident that included a pedestrian that is being conducted by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office. The collision was ultimately responsible for the pedestrian’s passing away. At approximately 8:55 p.m. on Route 14 south of Packwood Road in Phelps, Joel Mercado, 45, was wearing dark clothing and standing in the road when he was struck by an SUV and then by a second vehicle.
The findings of the investigation indicate that he was wearing dark clothing because he was standing in the road. Both automobiles were headed in the direction of the south. On Route 14, both autos were traveling in the same direction, which was southbound. As soon as they arrived at the scene, the accompanying medical personnel realized that Mercado had already died right in front of their very eyes and made the decision to pronounce him dead.
According to the information provided by the police, the drivers of both vehicles came to a stop and made attempts to render assistance to Mercado after the collision.
Prior to the collision, the Ontario County 911 Center had been fielding calls from worried citizens who were concerned about a man who was riding a bicycle in the vicinity. The crash resulted in the man being injured. The statements provided by the sheriff’s office indicate that the officer who responded to those calls was the one who discovered that Mercado had been harmed. Mercado’s injuries were not immediately reported.
Vehicle traffic was not permitted on the street while the deputy sheriffs were performing the investigation and accident reconstruction, which took several hours total. During that time, the roadway was closed to all other traffic.
