James Bryant Obituary, Death – James “Jim” Thomas Bryant departed this life on May 23, 2023, with his devoted family members at his side as he passed away gently. His parents, Jasper and Virginia Bryant, gave birth to him on May 3, 1944 in the town of Heflin, Alabama. Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary “Libby”; Bryant of Brooker, daughter Pam (Robert) Johnson of LaCrosse, granddaughter Macey Johnson, and siblings Helen Childers, Arthur (Diane) Bryant, and Jimmy E. Bryant. Jim also had a grandchild named Macey Johnson.
His mother and father, as well as his brother John David, his brother-in-law Les Childers, and his nephew Vince Childers, all passed away before Jim. Jim had a deep affection for all of his brothers, nieces, and nephews, and he maintained a very strong connection to his family in both Alabama and Florida. He was a guy of honor and unquestioned morality. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served for two periods and having been stationed in both Germany and Korea. As a paratrooper, he relished the adrenaline rush that came with jumping out of airplanes and flying. Jim took early retirement from his positions as District Supervisor at ITT Rayonier and Alachua County Public Works.
Jim lacked any sense of terror! As a cave diver and ocean diver, he frequently dove in environments where he was in close proximity to sharks. Jim and a close friend from high school ran a successful dive charter business together for a number of years. He was very pleased with himself after obtaining his license to serve as a captain on ships. His eagerness to put himself in perilous situations and experience exciting new things knew no bounds.
He was a voracious reader and always eager to further his knowledge, regardless of the subject matter. He was very passionate in history. Jim enjoyed listening to music of many types, from Pavarotti to Cajun, and he had a penchant for restoring vintage automobiles. Anyone who was familiar with Jim was aware of his undying devotion to the Alabama Crimson Tide. He was able to go on and on about his team and Bear Bryant for hours.
