Ernest Askew Obituary, Death – Ernest Win Askew was born on October 5, 1931 in Tipton, Oklahoma, in the home of Gladys Marie (Garner), and he passed away on May 21, 2023 in Clovis, New Mexico. His parents were Dell Robinson Askew and Gladys Marie (Garner). In 1935, Win and his family made the trip from Oklahoma to New Mexico’s Garrison. Win received his high school diploma in 1949 after completing his education at Causey, New Mexico.

After entering active service with the United States Navy in January 1951, he worked as a boatswain on the USS Bodeng Strait Naval Ship from January 1952 to November 1954. His service ended in November 1954. After receiving a discharge with honor, he was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with three stars, and a National Defense medal for China Service.

After moving back to his hometown of Garrison, New Mexico, he eventually met and wed Margaret Jane Millar. In 1972, he uprooted his family and relocated to Portales, New Mexico, where he found work in the construction industry as a carpenter. He had a green thumb and spent a lot of time tending to his garden and yard. He exerted a lot of effort in order to maintain “The Yard of the Month” in Portales. He was a man of few words who was always ready to provide a helping hand to whoever needed it. His favorite piece of advice that he gave to all of the workers at Powerline Inc. was.

The best way to look busy was to walk fast and look worried.” We have the impression that the staff members frequently followed his recommendations. In his later years, one of his favorite things to do was to attend senior dances. His favorite thing to do at Genesis Healthcare on Norris Street in Clovis, New Mexico was to dance with all of the nurses. We have reason to believe that they had a wonderful day spending time with our very unique daddy. He is survived by his son, Van Askew, who resides in Portales; three daughters, Exa Kay (Randy) Mitchell of Clovis, NM, Edie Gay (Jason) Renfro also located in Clovis, NM, and Jan (Blake) Bunch of Decatur, AL; and his pride and joy, seven grandchildren, Blakeley Bunch, Marc (Amanda) Haufmann, Ky (Rebekah) Mitchell, Rhet Roberts and partner (
