Charles Downey Obituary, Death – At the age of 86, Charles “Kent” Downey of Newton Falls, New York, who had formerly resided in Ogdensburg, New York, passed away at the Canton Potsdam Hospital on Thursday, May 18, 2023. The family has requested that the burial take place at the Cranberry Lake Cemetery when it is most convenient for them. Ogdensburg’s Frary Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements and is responsible for their care and direction.

Kent is survived by his three daughters, Lisa Griffith, Ginger Downey, and Wendy Charlton, all of Ogdensburg; a sister, Jo-Ella Freeman of Ogdensburg, New York; eleven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and a large number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kent will be greatly missed. Eleanor Sears, his longtime companion, is also among those who go on after him. A son, Todd Downey, who was born in 2014, a daughter, Robin Downey, who was born in 2023, a brother, Rod Downey, who was born in 1983, and a sister, Linda Cole, who was born in 2020 all passed away before Kent.

Kent Downey was the son of the late Charles Henry Downey and Thelma (Clark) Downey, and he was born on September 11, 1936 in Ogdensburg, New York. In 1955, he received his diploma from the Ogdensburg Free Academy. On September 20, 1960, Kent wed Agnes Mae LaJoy in a ceremony that took place at Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg, New York. The Reverend Robert Giroux presided over the ceremony. On January 5, 2005, she passed away before he did. After working for a short time at McAdams Garage, Kent went on to become a mechanic at Trimm’s Garage, where he was employed for a number of years. After some time, Kent became a member of the Ogdensburg Fire Department in February 1965. He served in that capacity until his retirement in February 1998. Carpentry, fishing, and hunting were all hobbies that Kent enjoyed. The winter months saw Kent living as a snowbird in Hendersonville, North Carolina, while he spent the summers in Cranberry Lake, New York.
